Suburb Cultural Center is initiation of AICA Armenia and Mekhitar Sebastatsi Art School to provide local and international artists and curators with an open space to exhibit and discuss art projects and solo exhibitions.
The main activities of the Suburb (artists’ talks, workshops, discussions, presentations, screenings and exhibitions) are taking place in the space of Mekhitar Sebastatsi Art School located in one of the suburbs of Yerevan called Bangladesh.The most recent activities of the center include international exhibition “All and Now” realized in April 2009 (Curator: Eva Khachatryan, coordinator: Sona Abgaryan). Presentation of an artist, film maker Danielle Vallet Kleiner (July 2009), curator and artist Joanna Warsza’s presentation “Stadium X. Living art projects in communistic stadium, Warsaw” (August 2009), Denmark based Rose Eken’s exhibition “Lost, sad and other songs” and Carina Randloev’s exhibition “Cables” (August 2009), the presentation of a photographer, journalist and traveler Trui Hanoulle’s and writer Gaea Schoeters‘ journey “Misses, Muslims and Motorbikes” (December 2009). In February 2010 the center hosted the presentation of NY and Beijing located curator Defne Ayas, the director of programs of Arthub, covering China and the rest of Asia, and curator of PERFORMA, the biennial of visual art performance (New York City). In March 2010 Eva Khachatryan organized the exhibition on women’s issues in Armenia entitled “Every Day, Everywhere”; with the participation of artists Sona Abgaryan, Susan Amudjanyan, Tsomak, Manan Torosyan, Karine Matsakyan.
In 2010-11 with initiation of Goethe Institute was realized seminar and workshop of Art in Public Space, where have participated artists from Gyumri and Yerevan.Organizers: Goethe Institute, Suburb Cultural Center, Mekhitar Sebastatsi Art School, Petra Reichensperger, Eva Khachatryan, Daniel Knorr.
The “Rotor” association for contemporary art from Graz is one of Suburb’s partners, with whom we are cooperating now on residency exchange program.
One of the recent projects (April 26-30, 2011) is “City in Use” (panel discussions, presentations, exhibits, actions in the city), which was done in cooperation with “The Other Space Foundation” (Warsaw).
